Four numbers before a finish

What decides whether an EGREE piece fits your house

Three pieces of furniture that a child stands on, sits on and lies on. Each one is settled by a measurement long before it is settled by a colour, and that is the whole of the EGREE approach.

  1. The measurement, before the adjective

    One number decides whether a piece works where you live: 33.8 to 38.6 inches of working height, a platform at 12, 16 or 20 inches, a footprint of 16.3 by 17.7. A finish you like is easy to find later. A table two inches too low for the person using it is not.

  2. The certificate, spelled out

    Half this category prints the words "CPC certified" and stops there. A Children’s Product Certificate is written by the maker or the importer, on the strength of testing done by a laboratory the Consumer Product Safety Commission has accepted. It says the piece meets the children’s product rules that apply to it, and it is a different thing from a Commission approval.

  3. What a piece is not for

    The changing table is built to the federal standard for a child up to thirty pounds, and the day your baby is over that is the day it becomes a table for folded laundry. The potty seat does not fit a square toilet rim. Neither limit is a fault, and both are worth knowing before the box is open.

  4. It has to move, and then stay still

    The changing table runs on four lockable wheels, so it crosses a rug to the window in the morning and locks against the wall at night. It folds without emptying the shelf underneath first, which is the difference between a table that gets folded and one that never does.

They arrive in order, and each one takes over roughly where the last one stops being the thing your child needs. That is why the EGREE line-up has stayed at three.

  1. From birth

    The changing table. It goes up before the baby comes home and it works until the child is thirty pounds, which is the weight the federal standard writes into the definition of one.

    The kitchen step stool, at its 20-inch platform. This is the age a toddler starts wanting to see what is happening on the counter, and the rail is what makes that answerable with a yes.

    The potty seat. The Academy of Pediatrics puts the usual start of toilet training between two and three, and readiness is about the child rather than the equipment - the ladder just removes the height from the argument.

    The stool again, with the platform dropped to 16 and then 12 inches. It is the only piece here that changes as the child grows, and it is the last one still in use when the others have gone.

What to measure before you choose an EGREE piece

Five of these are free and the sixth needs a ruler. All six are quicker than a return.

  1. Measure your own wrist, not your waist

    Stand as you would to change a baby, bend your elbow to ninety degrees and measure from the floor to your wrist. That is the height the changing pad should sit at. The four levels here run 33.8, 35.4, 37 and 38.6 inches, so most adults land on one of them exactly.

  2. Measure the alcove, not the room

    The table takes 29.9 by 23.6 inches on the floor and it rolls, so it needs a parking place as well as a working place. A wall between a cot and a window is usually the constraint, not the floor area.

  3. Measure the counter you actually use

    A standard kitchen counter is 36 inches. With the platform at its top setting a child stands 20 inches up, which brings an eighteen-month-old to the edge of that counter. Islands are often 36 as well; a bathroom vanity is closer to 32.

  4. Look at the shape of your toilet rim

    Round, U-shaped and elongated rims take the seat. A square rim does not, and no amount of adjusting the ladder changes that. Look down at the bowl before you order rather than after the box arrives.

  5. Weigh the child, once

    Thirty pounds is where the changing table standard stops, one hundred and fifty is what the wooden stool is rated to, one hundred and sixty-five is the seat. The first of those three is the one that arrives soonest.

  6. Decide who is assembling it

    The stool is flat-packed and takes one or two people about fifteen to twenty minutes with the hardware in the box. The table and the seat arrive folded and need no tools at all.

The part that is not a selling point

What furniture does, and what it does not do

A belt, a rail and a raised edge each stop at a different place, and knowing where is the whole of using one of these safely.

A changing table has a belt and a raised edge on four sides, and the American Academy of Pediatrics still says a baby is never left on one - not for a moment, not even strapped. The belt is there for the second your hand is on a diaper rather than on the child; it is not there so that the room can be left. Keep the wipes and the clean clothes where your hand reaches them without moving your feet, which is what the two side baskets are for.

A step stool puts a toddler at counter height, and the counter is where the kettle, the knives and the hob are. The rail keeps a child in the stool. It does nothing about what is within reach once they are up there, and moving the pan handle to the back of the hob is worth more than any feature on this page. An EGREE range built around three heights

Three pieces, six finishes, and one rule behind all three: a child should reach the thing without being lifted to it.

EGREE has been making nursery and toddler furniture since 2018, and the range has stayed deliberately short: one changing table, one step stool, one potty seat. Each of them is the answer to a height a small child cannot reach on their own, and none of them is a version of another one with a different badge on it.

A short range leaves room to build each piece around a measurement rather than around a feature list. The changing table rises through four levels so it meets your wrist instead of your knees; the stool climbs in three so a two-year-old and a five-year-old can share it; the seat is cut for round, U-shaped and elongated rims and for nothing else. Where a piece stops, it stops for a reason, and a toddler who has outgrown one of them has usually outgrown the job as well.

How do you work out what height an EGREE changing table should be?

Stand the way you would to change a baby, bend your elbow to a right angle, and measure from the floor to your wrist. That is where the pad wants to be. The four levels here are 33.8, 35.4, 37 and 38.6 inches, so two adults of different heights can share one table by moving it a level.

Getting this wrong is the commonest complaint about any changing table, and it is not a complaint about the table: a surface two inches too low is bent over eight times a day for two years.

Can you leave a toddler standing in an EGREE step stool?

It has a rail on four sides, it is rated to 150 pounds and it is made for children from eighteen months to five years. What it does not do is watch the counter for you. A child at counter height is in reach of the kettle, the knives and the hob, and moving those is worth more than any feature of the stool.

The rail is the reason a tower is a different object from a household step: a step lets a child up, a tower keeps them in one place once they are there.

Will an EGREE potty seat fit the toilet you already have?

It fits round, U-shaped and elongated rims, and it adjusts through six ladder settings to standard, comfort and ADA-height toilets. It does not fit a square rim.

Look down at your bowl before ordering. The shape is decided at the rim, not at the base, and a square rim is the one case where nothing about the seat can be adjusted to make it work.
